Verdict
- GW6
Haaland or Saka for the armband
Our first live flip: the game's most-owned striker at Anfield, or the in-form winger at home to Leeds.
Published · Updated with result
Flipped live on FPL Shrine on 9 October, before the GW6 deadline (Saturday 10 October, 11:00 UK time). One flip, recorded, never re-rolled.
GW6 is the first gameweek after the October international break, and the injury news ran right up to Friday's press conferences. By the time it settled, our team had one real 50/50 left: who got the captain's armband. Haaland was at Liverpool on Sunday. Saka had Leeds at home on Saturday lunchtime. We own both, we went through the numbers more than once, and it kept landing in the middle.
Flip 1 · CaptainHaaland or Saka
The dilemma
Captain Haaland (Man City, £15.6m), the most-owned player in the game, in the hardest fixture of his month, or Saka (Arsenal, £9.6m), who came back from the break in form and had the kinder fixture. It was the one decision that could swing our whole gameweek either way.
The case for Haaland
- Five goals in five games, 39 points and 7.8 points per game, and he's on penalties.
- 0.99 expected goal involvements (xGI) per 90 minutes, the best of anyone in our team.
- He's in 74.3% of teams. If he scores twice at Anfield, everyone who captained elsewhere drops a long way, quickly.
- Fitness is no longer a worry. Norway took him off after 65 minutes against Portugal, which was reported as fatigue rather than an injury, and Maresca said on Friday that he's "ready for Anfield".
The case for Saka
- Leeds at home, an easier game on paper than Haaland's trip to Anfield.
- Arsenal have scored 13 goals in their last three games against Leeds, more than four a match. That's a team record rather than a Saka stat, but it bodes well for whoever's at the heart of their attack.
- Three goals in five games, 32 points, 0.91 xGI per 90 and Arsenal's penalties.
- He scored twice for England over the break and came home without a flag, which very few premium players can say this week.
- With Havertz and Tzolis both injured, even more of Arsenal's attack runs through him.
- Only 15.7% of managers own him, so a big score as captain gains ground on most of the game.
Why it was genuinely 50/50
The two projection models we checked couldn't agree. Fantasy Football Hub had Haaland on 5.5 points and Saka on 5.4. Solio had it the other way round: Saka 5.85, Haaland 5.49. The average comes out at 5.6 for Saka and 5.5 for Haaland, a tenth of a point apart. Haaland has the better underlying numbers and the safety of ownership; Saka has the better fixture and plays at home. And Saka kicked off first, at 12:30 on Saturday. Some managers dread an early-kickoff captain; we preferred to think of it as getting the nerves over with before lunch.
The flip
- A Haaland Man City at Liverpool (A)
- B Coin's pick Saka Arsenal v Leeds (H)
The coin said Saka
What happened
Arsenal beat Leeds 2–1, but the goals came from Calafiori and Bruno Guimarães. Saka played the full 90 minutes without a goal or an assist: 2 points, 4 with the armband. A day later City won 3–0 at Anfield and Haaland scored one of them, 6 points in 79 minutes. With Haaland as captain, the pair would have given us 14 points instead of 10.
| Option | GW6 points |
|---|---|
| Saka (coin's pick) | 2 |
| Haaland | 6 |
The coin took the kinder fixture, and Haaland scored at Anfield anyway.
What some well-known managers did
We had company. FPL Focal and FPL Mate both captained Saka too, while Pras stuck with Haaland. Let's Talk FPL went for neither and captained Palmer, whose 8 points (16 as captain) beat both of them. Ben Crellin captained Bruno Fernandes, who scored 1.
| Manager | Captain | Bench points | GW6 points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Let's Talk FPL | Palmer | 8 | 79 |
| Pras | Haaland | 9 | 78 |
| FPL Mate | Saka | 6 | 67 |
| FPL Focal | Saka | 7 | 61 |
| Ben Crellin | B. Fernandes | 5 | 59 |

GW6 in summary
- 82Our GW6 points
- 58FPL average
- 68,294Our overall rank
Our best week since the Wildcard, captaincy and all. De Cuyper (15) and João Pedro (12) did the heavy lifting, Barry came off the bench for Szoboszlai with 6 more, and our overall rank climbed from 155,594 to 68,294. After six gameweeks we've scored 454 against an FPL average of 357. The coin's first live call didn't go its way, but at least it's consistent.
The Coin's record

- 4Long-term calls
After GW6. A head-to-head flip counts as right if the coin's pick outscored the other option, wrong if not, and level if they tied. Long-term calls (chip timing, and squad moves like which keeper to keep) play out over weeks, so we report what they've returned but leave them out of the right-or-wrong count. GW1 to GW5 were flipped pre-launch. See every Verdict.
